How is Etoricoxib Tablet Working?

Etoricoxib is a class of  COX-2 inhibitors that works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This enzyme is responsible for the production of prostaglandins, which is a chemical that causes pain, inflammation, and swelling in the body.

Whenever the body experiences any kind of inflammation, such as an injury, arthritis, or other inflammatory conditions, the body releases COX-2 enzymes. This enzyme further produces a compound called prostaglandins, which is responsible for pain, swelling, and redness.

Etoricoxib selectively blocks the COX-2 enzyme while avoiding the COX-1 which helps protect the stomach lining. This helps manage the pain and inflammation without hurting the stomach lining. 

Advantages of Etoricoxib Over Other NSAIDs 

In many cases it is recommended over other types of NSAIDs due to the following benefits – 

• Less stomach irritation
• Longer duration of action and benefits 
• Lower risk of ulcers as it does not affect the stomach lining

However, it has some disadvantages as well. It can increase blood pressure and should be used with caution in heart patients.

Acute Gout	120 mg once daily for a limited period (maximum 8 days)
Post-operative pain	90 mg or 120 mg once daily (short-term use)

There are a few medications with which Etoricoxib can interact it should not be taken along with these medications – 

• Other NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Diclofenac) may increase the risk of stomach ulcers.
• Blood thinners such as Warfarin can cause bleeding issues.
• Diuretics & ACE inhibitors can affect kidney function.
• Rifampicin when taken along with Etoricoxib can reduce Etoricoxib’s effectiveness.
